Principal's Welcome

Sam Tyndall

Welcome to Black Rock Primary School.

On behalf of the students, parents and staff at Black Rock Primary School, I extend a very warm welcome to our school. We are a close-knit community and value working together to achieve the best academic and wellbeing outcomes for our students.

Black Rock Primary School is located in Arkaringa Crescent, Black Rock which is a South-Eastern suburb of Melbourne. The school is situated in a unique bayside setting. It is bordered by Port Phillip Bay to the west and Royal Melbourne and Sandringham Golf Clubs to the east. The environment is secure for its students and provides excellent recreational and sporting facilities with its adventure playgrounds and full – sized oval.

At Black Rock Primary School, we recognise that student wellbeing is the foundation for successful learning and lifelong achievement. We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where every child feels valued, respected, and connected. Through evidence-based wellbeing practices, social and emotional learning programs, and strong partnerships with families and the wider community, we foster resilience, empathy, and a sense of belonging. Our goal is to ensure that every student is supported to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our teachers are talented and highly dedicated.  They work in collaboration to develop a school culture that values teaching and learning. We understand the importance of early literacy and numeracy skills that provide the foundations for all learning, as well as contributing to self-esteem. We take an evidence-informed approach to teaching and learning to ensure all students are given the best possible opportunity to grasp vital knowledge and skills, developing mastery in these areas and, most importantly, the confidence and passion to read, write and engage in mathematics as a result.

Black Rock Primary School’s knowledge-rich sequence of learning across Science, the Humanities and the Arts, supported through the integrated use of ICT, ensures breadth of learning across all domains of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. This supports students to not only understand the complex world around them but begin to discover their passions and interests that can be further explored in secondary schooling. Students are encouraged to take risks with their learning, to be independent thinkers and to display initiative. Cooperation and teamwork are valued, and we have high expectations of our students in their academic, creative and physical endeavours.

Our school provides a tiered system of support to ensure every student’s learning needs are met. Through a structured Response to Intervention approach, we deliver high-quality classroom teaching, targeted small-group interventions for students requiring additional support, and intensive, individualised programs for those with higher-level needs. At the same time, we extend and enhance learning opportunities for students who are ready to be challenged beyond the core curriculum, ensuring all learners are supported to achieve their full potential.

Further rounding of the educational experience includes participation in the specialist programs of LOTE (Chinese), Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Physical Education, as well as co-and extra-curricular programs including: Adventure and Canberra camps for (Year 3-6), Interschool Sports Programs (Year 4-6), Intensive Swimming Programs (F-6), Specialised STEM Program (Year 4-6), a biennial whole-school concert, Foundation/Year 6 “Buddies” program, student leadership programs, curriculum incursions and excursions and lunchtime clubs, just to name a few!

Our school promotes values that empower students to contribute positively to the school and the wider communities to which they belong.  We celebrate the diversity of our school’s culture and community, and our students live and learn by our values:

  • Aspiration – Striving to achieve one’s fullest potential and pursuing excellence in all endeavours.
  • Integrity – Acting with honesty and maintaining strong moral principles in all situations.
  • Kindness – Showing empathy, compassion, and care towards others in all interactions.
  • Respect – Recognising and accepting the differences in ability, race, religion, and beliefs of others.

Black Rock Primary School is proud of the friendly cooperative spirit between parents and staff and all members of the school community are committed to a team approach to achieve the best possible outcomes for all our students.
